Belfry Of Armentières
Belfry Of Armentières
Belfry Of Armentières
Description
In 1918, a Flemish Neo-Gothic Town Hall replaced the former 17th-century city hall dynamited by the Germans. Completed in 1934, it is the work of Louis-Marie Cordonnier, architect of the reconstruction, who also designed the slender belfry of 67 meters. The beautiful view of the Flemish plain and the towers of Euralille from the top of the belfry is worth: 96 steps to climb for a breath of fresh air and a breathtaking panorama. The platform is perched at 42 meters. Symbol of the independence and freedom of the communes and pride of the northerners, the belfry, of pure Flemish style, has kept the pace of its Gothic predecessors. It hosts eleven bells including two respectively 510 and 1220 kg. The chime that rings the hours, interprets the air of the "Madelon". Guided tours of the Town Hall and Belfry on request at the Tourist Office of Armentières.
